Wearing EmbracePlus correctly is essential for good data collection. Follow these steps to make sure it’s worn properly:
- Wear EmbracePlus on your non-dominant wrist, unless you’ve been told otherwise.
- Place the watch face on the top of your wrist, about a finger’s width from the wrist bone.
- Fasten the band so EmbracePlus fits snugly and doesn’t slide around on your wrist.
- Check that the sensors are touching your skin.
- The green light from the PPG sensor LEDs underneath should be completely covered. You should see no green light on your skin.
Wearing EmbracePlus incorrectly may affect the quality of data collection.
Use with water
EmbracePlus is waterproof, with an IP67 rating. You can wear it while exercising and in the shower, within these limits:
- Do not take EmbracePlus deeper than 3.3 feet/1 meter.
- Do not keep it underwater for longer than 30 minutes at a time.
- Keep it away from high pressure water, such as a jet or a tap at full force.
- Avoid hot water and steam. Heat can soften the seals that keep EmbracePlus waterproof.
Take EmbracePlus off for hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms, and for swimming in saltwater. If saltwater does get on the device, rinse it with clean fresh water under a gentle flow, never a jet, and let it dry before wearing it again.
Bluetooth doesn’t work while EmbracePlus is underwater, so data can’t transfer to the Care App during that time. EmbracePlus stores it in its own memory instead, and syncs once it reconnects to your phone.
Do not wear EmbracePlus in these situations:
- On injured skin, or on skin affected by a skin condition where EmbracePlus sits. Wear EmbracePlus only on intact skin.
- Over a tattoo. Tattooed skin absorbs the PPG light differently, so PPG data may not be reliable.
- When EmbracePlus appears to be damaged.
If your skin becomes irritated
In case of skin irritation after prolonged use, it is suggested to change the recording location by wearing EmbracePlus on the other wrist, unless otherwise specified.
- Clean EmbracePlus before wearing it again, to avoid further irritation. Without regular cleaning, skin irritation is more likely to occur: Cleaning and Sanitizing EmbracePlus
- If EmbracePlus gets wet, make sure it is completely dry before wearing it again, unless otherwise specified.
- If the skin becomes red, itchy, or if any pain is felt for more than 2-3 days even after cleaning, it is suggested to discontinue use. Fill out the form at this link to report the skin reaction to the Empatica Support Team. The team will then reach out directly to assist further.
The materials used in the manufacturing of EmbracePlus are widely used in wearable devices. Empatica performed biocompatibility tests according to the ISO 10993 standard series and has successfully passed the tests. Nevertheless, rare instances of sensitization may still occur, even in individuals without known allergies to device components.
